This will be a forum where everyone can have a seat of equal importance to share their views. It has channels you can subscribe to that will keep you updated to posts and information on the topics you choose to follow. As with Arthurian legend, our Merlin is Dr. Austin Stiles and his technological wizardry has created something with truly awesome potential. To be clear, there will be no King Arthur and we are all knights fighting for the same cause of creating excellent dental providers and allowing them to provide excellent care to the citizens of Alabama.
It will cost $2 to join for an annual membership and you must be a licensed Alabama dentist. At 240 members our costs will be breakeven on the hosting cost. Any additional money raised will be donated towards Alabama advocacy efforts, likely through ALDPAC.
Our intention with creating this platform on Mighty Networks and the collaborative efforts of this GroupMe and these Google docs is not to supplant the professional organizations that serve this state. If you do not belong to and support ALDA and your specialty groups, you must understand their critical importance to the protection of our profession and should consider it a high priority to join and pay dues. There will be channels on our platform with organization specific content that will be derived from their websites and posts and if they choose to, administered by their leaders.
Our goal is to create an information funnel for everything Alabama Dentistry. We hope that this will create an institutional memory of how organizations work, why they serve as they do, and what their boundaries and abilities are. It may also serve as a calendar or collection of CE, activity and information provided by some of those organizations. This will not be built overnight or by one individual and it will be crowdsourced by all of you and what you choose to share. We hope that it will create a new and increased transparency of action and purpose and thereby allow for grassroots involvement in advocacy and help lead our profession into a more modern and connected society.
As I have said multiple times before, I sincerely hope that you take very seriously the threat of our Board being usurped or dissolved if we pursue action and testimony in forums outside of dentistry, such as at the Sunset Committee hearing. Please consider withdrawing your requests to speak in that hearing and instead focus your efforts on change from within. The same concern goes with insurance reform and I hope that you all understand how real an anticompetitive charge by the FTC can be and the damage it could do to our organizations and our state if we do not speak and conduct ourselves appropriately. If you need more information on those subjects, you should attend the Town Hall meeting ALDA is hosting in Sandestin to discuss insurance reform. They will have a lawyer explaining what we are allowed to do and how things can be achieved as well explaining the efforts ALDA is going to be rolling out to push for positive change.
I look forward to continuing to engage with you, my colleagues in this new and improved virtual environment. Keep being brave!
Our community, courses, and memberships are pretty special. We’re focused on the ways it will make a huge difference in your life.
